Umm Al Quain (U.A.E)

Happened to visit Umm Al Quain last week! 23 yrs in Dubai and never visited this state...tells a lot about my homely state ;-)

But honestly, loved this languorous little town! Cars were driving at slow pace, no honking and flashing or the hurry to reach the other end, as if life is about to end, as is the scenario in Dubai! Lined with low buildings and traditional villas, straight roads, small shops on either side of the roads this town is a little surprise after the high rise buildings, sleek busy roads and posh veneered look of a cosmopolitan Dubai!

Self sufficient with its own set of automobile showrooms, malls, hypermarket, fish and vegetable market, hospital and all basic amenities associated with the modern world….and yet it has the relaxed, lazy atmosphere of a country side which doesn’t jar on your already frayed nerves! There is a beach and there are sparse trees and it’s a clean town with some old worn out tattered ruins which I am sure are in the process of demolishing to erect a new building.

One can see that the town is slowly catching up as new building are under construction on either side of the main road entering Umm Al Quain but compare to the whirlwind construction of Dubai its snails pace and I hope this small tranquil town and a state in its own right doesn’t loose its slow, peaceful charm in trying to ape its more sophisticated counterpart. We need these out of the way places to just go and have a little bit of solitude to come close to ourselves – something that is becoming increasingly difficult in the hurry burry of life!

In nutshell I loved Umm Al Quain for its slow pace and easy life! I guess a small Towner from back in India will always remain a small Towner in heart! :-)
